MEMBER ETHICS

 

 

POLICY STATEMENT:

 

The Board believes that the conduct of all Board members should be exemplary.

 

 

GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES:

 

At each organizational meeting, the members of the Board shall reaffirm their commitment to the following principles:

 

1.         To attend all Board meetings and Board committee meetings of which they are a member.

 

2.         To devote time, thought, and study to the duties and responsibilities of a Board member, so that they may render effective and credible service.

 

3.         To work with their fellow Board members in a spirit of harmony and cooperation in spite of differences of opinion that arise during vigorous debate of points at issue.

 

4.         To avoid rancour and bitterness;  observe proper decorum and behaviour;  encourage full and open discussions in all matters with their fellow members of the Board; treat them with respect and consideration; and share with their fellow members of the Board any information or matter in which they should be concerned.

 

5.         To make no disparaging remarks, in or out of the Board meetings, about other members of the Board or their opinions, but reserve the right to make honest and respectful criticism.

 

6.         To base their personal decision on all available facts in each situation; vote according to their honest conviction in every case, unswayed by partisan bias of any kind; and thereafter abide by and uphold the final majority decision of the Board.

 

7.         To do everything possible to maintain the integrity, confidence, and dignity of the office of Board member.

 

8.         To remember at all times that as an individual they have no legal authority outside the meetings of the Board, except as sanctioned by the Board, and conduct their relationships with employees, the local citizenry, and the media on the basis of this fact.

 

9.         To bear in mind under all circumstances that the primary function of the Board is to establish the policies by which the schools are to be administered, but that the administration of the educational program and conduct of school business shall be left to the Superintendent and the professional and non-professional staff.

 

10.       To welcome and encourage active cooperation with citizens, organizations, and the media in establishing policy on current school operation and proposed future developments.
