The Board of Trustees
believes that the Board and its Superintendent of Schools constitute a leadership
team. A productive working relationship
between the Board and the Superintendent of Schools is essential to the
successful operation of the school jurisdiction. The development and maintenance of such a
relationship will be greatly assisted by a periodic review of the
Superintendent’s diverse responsibilities.
Once having employed a Superintendent, the Board shares in the
responsibility for his/her success, with an obligation to offer guidance and
support in carrying out his/her duties.
Evaluation is a
valuable tool in establishing and carrying out the goals of any
organization. The purpose of the
performance evaluation of the Superintendent by the Board is to recognize
achievement and to provide opportunities for growth and development in areas
identified by Board policy.
Specific purposes
include:
1. To establish and maintain good working relationships between the Board and Superintendent by developing a team approach.
2. To ensure
achievement of school division goals.
3. To clarify the
functions and responsibilities of the Superintendent.
4. To improve
performance by suggesting areas of responsibility and operating techniques that
may be strengthened.
5. To give
encouragement and commendation for work well done.
6. To record evidence of performance and improvement. (i.e. professional
growth of the Superintendent)
7. To provide
an opportunity for the Board and Superintendent to confer at periodic intervals
on his/her performance.
8. To establish
a procedure for performance appraisal in a setting other than during times of
crisis.
9. To improve
understanding of the respective roles of the Board and the Superintendent.
10. To develop greater clarification of the needs and goals of the Division.
