POLICY STATEMENT:
The Board believes that buildings,
grounds, and equipment must be planned, organized and maintained to ensure
safety for all
students, employees, and other citizens
GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES:
A. On-going safety
1. Buildings shall be
planned, equipped, and maintained in accordance with appropriate local,
provincial, and federal safety regulations.
2. Buildings shall be
provided with alarm systems and fire extinguishers.
3. Students and other
persons using a building shall be supervised appropriately.
B. Fire drills
Principal
shall:
1. At the beginning of the
school year bring to the attention of the school staff details of the fire
drill procedures and fire prevention safeguards.
2. Order fire drills to be
conducted at a rate of no less than six per year.
3. Supervise the
enforcement of the fire prevention safeguards.
4. Keep a record of the
fire drills conducted.
5. Ensure that fire
evacuation procedures are appropriately posted throughout the school.
C. Emergency evacuation procedures
1. By the end of the first
week of September of each year, principals are required to submit to the
Superintendent the emergency procedures plan for their school. Such a plan must include the procedures to be
followed, the authorities to be informed, and a listing of alternative spaces
that would be used in the event of an emergency.
2. This plan must be shared
with the staff at the first staff meeting of the school year. A copy of the plan must be posted in the
office, the staff room, and on bulletin boards accessible to students in the
school building. Appropriate portions of
the emergency plan procedures will be provided to the parents.
