CATEGORY:   BUS DRIVER RESPONSIBILITIES

 

 

POLICY STATEMENT:

 

The Board believes that school bus drivers play a vital role in ensuring safe and efficient transportation for students.

 

 

GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES:

 

A.         Reporting and qualification

 

1.         All drivers shall be responsible to the Transportation Coordinator.

 

2.         All bus drivers shall hold

a.         a valid Alberta Class 2 driver's license.

b.         the Alberta transportation "S Endorsement."

 

3.         All bus drivers shall provide a driver's abstract each year before September  1, and more often if requested.

 

 

B.         Duties

 

1.         Each bus driver shall

 

a.         know and at all times comply with the Highway Traffic Board regulations governing operation of school buses.

 

b.         report actual route distance to the Transportation Coordinator  for payment purposes. (The Transportation Coordinator shall verify bus routes.  In the event of a discrepancy between the actual and reported route distance, the Transportation Coordinator shall make an adjustment to remuneration, retroactive to the beginning of the school year or to the date when the discrepancy first occurred.)

 

c.                   adhere to the assigned route and schedule, and convey only those students approved by the Board.

 

d.         report any suggestions to improve the efficiency of routes to the  Transportation Coordinator.

 

 

 

e.         report changes to the passenger list to the Transportation   Coordinator  by the next school day.

 

f.          carry out daily pre-trip inspections.

 

g.         maintain daily vehicle records (log book).

 

h.         keep bus clean inside and out.

 

i.          maintain passenger discipline.

 

j.          maintain safety standards, report hazardous conditions or situations,  and report vehicle defects.

 

k.         perform other duties as assigned.

 

l.          adhere to all Board policies.

 

 

C.         Bus parking for Division-owned buses

 

1.         During the day buses will be parked at the facility designated for that purpose by the Transportation Coordinator.

 

2.         The location at which buses are parked at night will be determined by the Transportation Supervisor on an individual basis.  Efficiency and appropriateness of parking location will be major considerations in this determination.

 

3.         The Board shall establish a rate of reimbursement, and shall make payment by the end of March for the cost of plugging in buses.
