Principal’s Overview

H.A. Kostash School, also known as HAK School, serves three communities. Waskatenau on the western boundary, Smoky Lake in the middle, and Bellis on the East. The school accommodates 310 students in Kindergarten to grade twelve.

All elementary and junior high grades are currently single grade classes with approximately 18 to 25 students in each classroom. French as a second language is mandated from ECS to grade 9. Elementary students are sponsored by our parent group, CASA, for swimming lessons as well as a number of field trip and in school programs. Students in junior high are offered a number of options to choose from to provide some variety in programming.

Our philosophy of inclusion allows students the opportunity to interact with students of their own age and grade.

At the high school level, students have a selection of core and career based courses. Work experience, green certificate (farming practices), and the Registered Apprenticeship Program are also available as options for high school students.

The school runs a very popular outdoor education program as well as foods and fashion, carpentry, and welding. The carpentry and welding courses are currently taught by personnel from Portage College.

Our graduation rates are above those of the provincial averages. Students who stay in school, graduate.

The school has tremendous support from our parents, who have sponsored and built an incredible playground and provide students with the opportunity for many field trips, and cultural experiences.

Our main strengths rest in our parental support and our strong, dedicated staff. Our students share the support of the community.

HAK School provides our students with a very rich and varied school program.
