STUDENT DISCIPLINE

The aim of establishing discipline in the school is to provide an
atmosphere in which students can feel safe, and have a place to focus
on their school work free from fears and distractions.

The goals of our discipline program are to have students take respon-
sibility for their actions, see the need for a set of school rules, and to
internalize these rules.

Procedures:
Students are made aware of both classroom and school rules within
the first week of school. This is done both formally by classroom
teachers and informally on an ongoing basis.

Students are expected to obey all classroom and school rules.
If a student chooses to break one or more school rules, a set of steps
is generally used to correct the behaviour. These steps are intended
as a guide line and are not meant to be binding or inflexible.

Minor Offences
Minor offences include behaviours such as pushing, playing in out of
bounds areas, running in the hallways, name calling, or breaking ba-
sic classroom rules. In dealing with these types of offences a series
of steps is normally employed. An example is outlined below:

Step 1: Verbal warning, discussion of incorrect
behaviour and behaviour expected
A discipline form is sent to the parent
Step 2: Written record, review of rules.
Step 3: Written record, phone call or letter to parent, loss
of recess privileges or community work.
Step 4: Written record, contact parents, loss of l-3 days
recess privileges or community work.
Step 5: Written report, parents contacted, 3-5 days loss
of recess privileges or community work. For
more serious offences a suspension may be
implemented.
Step 6: Move to major offences system.

Note: If the problem seems serious, one or more steps may be skipped.
