Hamburgers for the Homeless
For the second consecutive year, students from the Vilna Off-Campus Achievement Academy (VOCAA) will travel to Edmonton to cook hamburgers for the less fortunate in the Boyle Street area.
“Last year our project was very well received by the residents of the Boyle Street area and by the staff at the Boyle Street Mission,” VOCAA coordinator Nav Atwal said. “I was told by the coordinator that he had not seen a school undertake such a project at his location before. At the end of that day, he was already asking if we would return next year. Of course, I informed him that it would be a yearly initiative.
“Last year we managed to serve around 350 hamburgers, but this year I would love to raise the bar even higher,” Atwal said. “It was heartbreaking to turn people away after we ran out of food. The genuine gratitude we received from the less fortunate who graced us with their presence was overwhelming and my students, along with myself, left that day feeling changed for the better as human beings.”
If anyone would like to donate to the initiative, cheques made out to Vilna School can be mailed (Box 190, Vilna, AB T0A 3L0) or dropped off in person. Donations can also be dropped off at Vilna School or the Off-Campus Academy.
Donations can be made until May 10, 2018, with the excursion to Edmonton taking place in late May.
