AVPS changes entrance age for Kindergarten students beginning in 2016/2017
During the April 23, 2015 Board of Trustees meeting, the decision was made to reverse an earlier decision on entrance dates for Kindergarten programs. Previously, children who were age 5 before March 1 of the current school year could be enrolled into Kindergarten. The April 23 decision of the board moves the entrance date back to December 31 of the current school year.
This decision was made for a number of reasons. It was felt that students born before December 31 are more academically ready to attend school. Also, the change of dates were part of the Education Act implemented recently by the Province of Alberta. Under the Early Childhood Services Regulation which is part of the Education Act, Section 2 states that “commencing in the 2018-2019 school year, for the purposes of entering Kindergarten, a child must be at least 5 years old as of December 31 of the respective school year.”
In adjusting Aspen View Public Schools administrative procedures, the Board of Trustees made the decision to allow for adjustments to the division’s entrance age requirements before the provincially mandated timeline of 2018/2019. It has been decided that the division will adjust entrance dates commencing September 2016 for the 2016/2017 school year.
AVPS is already accepting registrations for the 2015/2016 school year based on our existing administrative procedure, which has March 1 as a deadline date. We will continue to do so for the 2015/2016 academic year.
