Homegrown in Aspen View: Alison Pahl

Alison & Eziah PahlI began my school career in Kindergarten at Athabasca Elementary School in 1993. What fun it was to be in Mme. Asfeldt’s French Immersion Kindergarten class! We played, learned letters, went on field trips around town, and started learning FRENCH! I had no idea then what joy and opportunity learning French would bring to my life. When Whispering Hills Primary School officially opened in 1994, I began Grade 1 in the beautiful new school. I was blessed to have caring teachers who taught me to love learning and who helped my French language skills grow.

In Grade 4, I began attending Landing Trail Intermediate School. Being part of the French Immersion program was special; my class was like a family. At LTIS, I remember really noticing how much my teachers enjoyed teaching. Through friendly banter between them and their keen senses of humour, both M. MacIsaac and Mr. Madden made our class feel like their favourite class in the world! I remember laughing a lot at school. That’s important!

In Grade 8, I began attending Edwin Parr Composite School. How exciting it was to celebrate our French learning with an exchange trip to Quebec at the end of Grade 9! We lived with our exchange families, saw Old Quebec City, celebrated Carnaval de Québec, and sampled delicious tire (traditional maple taffy). Our young French Immersion eyes were opened to the possibilities for travel that would be made easier because we now spoke another language!

In Senior High, I have especially fond memories of Ms. Burns’ art class - my break from the grind of core classes (which, don’t get me wrong, I also loved!). How wonderful it was to have the freedom to experiment with different art media and styles. Ms. Burns pushed us to try new things, but also to discover and explore what brought us great joy.

Thanks to wonderful teachers, wonderful parents and a great learning experience in Aspen View, I loved learning, loved school, and it just made sense that I would want to teach. After graduating from EPC in 2006, I earned a B.A. in Sociology from Athabasca University while working at WHPS as an Educational Assistant in the French Immersion classes. After attending The King’s University College in Edmonton to earn my B.Ed After Degree, I couldn’t wait to get back to Athabasca to start teaching! My husband, Eziah, and I love it here. We are so pleased to be raising our daughter in this peaceful valley, surrounded by great lakes for fishing. We’re excited to enroll our daughter, Lily, in Kindergarten at WHPS. She will begin her own French Immersion journey in September 2021.

I’m grateful for the education that I received as a student in Aspen View. I learned to love learning and I learned the skill of learning another language. Thank you, Aspen View, for providing the choice of French Immersion as a great opportunity for your students!
