Homegrown in Aspen View: Elizabeth Yowney

Elizabeth YowneyOn January 7th, 2002, I stepped into Whispering Hills Primary School for my first day of work and I have not turned back!

My name is Elizabeth Yowney and I am a proud graduate of Aspen View School Division. I was first an Athabasca Elementary School Chipmunk for Grades 1-7 in what is now Landing Trail Intermediate School. For Grades 8-12 we were in the former Edwin Parr Composite School building up on the big hill. I was a graduate of the class of 1990.

Some of my most memorable teachers who have helped me become who I am today were Mrs. Lehto, Mrs. Hyde, Mr. Tannas and Mrs. LaPlace.

After graduating high school, I attended Alberta Vocational College in Lac La Biche for Early Childhood Education, receiving my diploma in 1991, which led me to work at the community daycare centre.

I married my husband Wayne in 1992. Our eldest son Myles was born in 1993 followed by Matthew in 1995. I was a stay-at-home mom until Matthew started Kindergarten, and that is when I began volunteering at WHPS. An Educational Assistant position became available and Evie Lundgard and Marianne Folkmann encouraged me to apply. I received the position and I have been at the same school now for 19 years.

My husband and I currently live east of town and our sons have remained in community along with us. Matthew works at Pleasant Valley Lodge as a chef and our son Myles works at NAPA. Myles is presently dating Amy Zacharuk, who is finishing her teaching degree and is another Athabasca born and raised local gal.

I am proud to call Athabasca my home!
