Homegrown in Aspen View: Sarah Feledichuk

Sarah FeledichukMy name is Sarah Feledichuk and I am a graduate of Aspen View School Division. I was raised in Thorhild where I, along with my four brothers, attended Thorhild Elementary School for Grades K-4, then transferred to Thorhild Central School where I graduated in 2013. As a student I grew to value the close-knit community that small town schools are, and how impactful teachers can be on their students. I have so many wonderful memories of my amazing teachers/educational assistants like Mrs. Fleming, Mrs. Marshal, Mrs. Lyons, Mr. Sereda, Mr. Salik and countless more who have helped shape me into the teacher I am today. They all treated my classmates and I with respect and compassion and made our 12 years of schooling fly by with the excitement they brought each day.

Sports played a large part in my school community. Having so many brothers, I developed a competitiveness that can firmly be blamed on them. It was through sports that I found my love for teaching. The mentorship that my teachers gave me both in and out of the classroom was something that I appreciated and wanted to reciprocate for future students. Because we turned into a K-12 school, I was also provided opportunities to explore the teaching career during my senior preps as elementary teachers would allow me to come into their classes and help students with reading or academic work, and I found their eagerness to learn amazing to be around.

In 2013 I attended MacEwan University, then after two years I transferred to the University of Alberta where I completed my Bachelors of Education with a Chemistry Major in 2018. During my schooling years I got the opportunity to teach in Sherwood Park and Fort Saskatchewan. While I enjoyed these experiences a lot, I found that due to the larger class sizes, it was harder to build those teacher-student relationships that I value greatly, as well as the family atmosphere that small towns bring. So after graduating from university I applied for a position at Thorhild in which I taught a variety of grades from elementary to high school. In 2019 I transferred to H.A. Kostash School in Smoky Lake where I have taught for the past two years. Many challenges have faced the small community of Smoky Lake and its students over the two years I have been here, and it was during these times that I couldn’t have been more appreciative of how supportive this community and school is. I have made valuable connections with many amazing students and co-workers that I will always remember and cherish, and I look forward to making more each and every year.

I hope to impact my students the same way my teachers have impacted me, and help inspire them to find their journey, whatever that may be! Thank you Aspen View for the many opportunities you have given me and continue to provide for students.
