Homegrown in Aspen View: Treena Michalski

Treena MichalskiHi, I’m Treena! I was raised in Athabasca and had the privilege of going through the entire K-12 Aspen View school program. I knew at a very young age that I wanted to be a teacher, and I am now so proud to be teaching in this school division.

At the age of 5, I remember setting up my classroom, preparing lessons and practicing my penmanship on the new technology my dad brought home - the whiteboard! Although my students were dolls and they didn’t communicate much, this was where my love for teaching began. This passion was later solidified when I had the privilege of having Mrs. Joanne Hanson as my Grade 1 teacher. She instilled so much confidence in her students and helped foster a love for learning in each and every child. I don’t remember exactly what curricular outcomes I learned back then, but I sure remember feeling loved, capable and important.

My husband Chris is also proud to have graduated from Aspen View. He took part in the K-9 French Immersion Program. Now, we are thrilled that our three kids can take part in this same program. I am confident they will thrive and love their experiences growing up as much as we did.

My teaching career started with Aspen View in 2009. Today I am proud to be part of the Grade 6 team at Landing Trail Intermediate School. Our school is bonded tightly, and it is an encouraging place to grow as an educator. Everyone works together as a team and truly puts the best interests of the children first.

The opportunities offered to students through Aspen View are endless. Above all else though, I really think this division stands out because of its people. The teachers, administration, educational assistants, front office staff, bus drivers, school custodians and volunteers shape a love for learning and create a safe space to grow.

My grandfather worked as a custodian at LTIS for many years. He was the kindest man and will always be remembered for his soft nature, smiling face and ability to brighten the day of all who passed him in the halls. It was clear he loved his job and the people he was surrounded by. I gratefully smile every time I walk by his old work room on my way to teach in the gymnasium. I strive everyday to make a difference like he did for so many!

My teaching career has been very fulfilling so far. Every day is different, and I love having the opportunity to share my love for learning with others. I am so grateful for the opportunities I have had, and I look forward to all the adventures that are yet to come.
