Homegrown In Aspen View: Tammi Douglas & Valeri Haines

Tammi Douglas & Valeri HainesMy name is Tammi Douglas and I am a graduate of Aspen View School Division. I was born and raised in Athabasca. I started Kindergarten at home with Mrs. Brick who came to teach me once a week. The advantage of growing up in a small community is on my first day of Grade 1, my neighbor Lloyd Lachance, who was my bus driver, walked me into the school and brought me into my classroom.

I have many fond memories of my school years; the fondest being a member of Mrs. Douglas’ choir group. Little did I know at the time that I would end up marrying her son.

After graduating high school, I had primarily worked in the healthcare system until my sister, Valeri Haines, recruited me to work casually at Landing Trail Intermediate School in the office.  After a few months of working at LTIS, a job opportunity at Edwin Parr Composite School opened. Lucky for me, the admin team chose me for the secretary position.

The last eight years have flown by and have been filled with great memories of staff and students. There is no greater joy than being here for the kids. I was thrilled to watch my own kids, Gavin & Cailin, graduate from EPC.

My name is Valeri Haines and I am a graduate of Aspen View School Division. I attended Kindergarten in the Old Brick School then moved to the Athabasca Elementary School until Grade 6, then proceeded to Edwin Parr Composite for my junior and senior high school years.

Thinking back to my times at AES, I remember the Science Fairs, attending ‘Play Days’, going to the Legislature in Grade 6, travelling to Calgary for choir provincials, and painting a mural on the wall across from the Art Room. In high school I enjoyed Band and Art class but my favorite class was Industrial Arts with Mr. Baker. To this day I am grateful for the skills I had learned as I still love to do wood working and finishing.

I first began working with Aspen View driving school bus in 2005. This also permitted me the opportunity to volunteer in my children’s classes and drive them on their field trips. In 2010 I began working as a secretary at Landing Trail Intermediate School. I love being part of this school team. The atmosphere and sense of community at LTIS make it a wonderful work environment for both students and staff and it’s so nice to see the students grow and learn. The schools that I attended as a child and young adult are the same that my children were also able to attend, and I am so appreciative that they were able to complete their school years here as well.
