Aspen View Public Schools announces school-based administrative appointments

Principal, Grassland School

Larry IrlaAspen View Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Larry Irla as principal of Grassland School, effective for the 2022-23 school year.

Larry’s teaching career began in Spirit River, AB, in 1991. After more than 10 years there, in 2002 he joined the staff at Boyle School where he has remained ever since. He was appointed as assistant principal at Boyle School in 2011. Larry holds Bachelor degrees in Commerce and Education from the University of Alberta, and a Masters degree in Education from the University of Calgary.

Larry has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to the families and communities with whom he has worked, and his depth of experience in both teaching and administration will be valuable in his new position at Grassland School.

Principal, Centre for Alternative & Virtual Education (CAVE)

Sean MorrisonAspen View Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Sean Morrison as principal of the Centre for Alternative & Virtual Education (CAVE), a role he has filled on an acting basis since February 1, 2022.

Sean has over 25 years of experience in education. After starting his teaching career in Calling Lake, AB, he joined the staff at Edwin Parr Composite (EPC) School in 1999 and became assistant principal in 2013. Among his key contributions was serving as Aspen View Public Schools’ design lead for the new EPC building project. Sean holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta.

Sean prides himself on being approachable, organized, knowledgeable and open-minded. His experience working with senior high students at EPC is a valuable asset in supporting non-traditional learning and virtual education to students enrolled with the CAVE and schools throughout Aspen View.

Principal, H.A. Kostash School

Brenda MykytiukAspen View Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Brenda Mykytiuk as principal of H.A. Kostash School, effective for the 2022-23 school year.

A graduate of H.A. Kostash School herself, Brenda has served as principal of Vilna School since 2020. From 2017-2020, she served as assistant principal of Vilna School and K-3 lead for the Aspen View numeracy initiative. Brenda has been with Aspen View Public Schools since 2009, with her previous experience including roles as a classroom teacher, literacy coordinator and inclusive education coordinator. She also has teaching experience in Alberta, Ontario and Australia. Brenda holds a Bachelor degree from the University of Alberta and a Masters degree from Concordia University.

Brenda is a resourceful, meticulous and energetic administrator, and her strong ties to the Smoky Lake community will be an asset in her new role, particularly as the school prepares to move into its new building within the next several months.

Assistant Principal, Boyle School

Caitlynn ChernishAspen View Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Caitlynn Chernish as assistant principal of Boyle School, effective for the 2022-23 school year.

An alumnus of Edwin Parr Composite School, Caitlynn has spent her entire 10-year teaching career at Smith School, and has served as principal of Smith School since 2018. Caitlynn holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta, and is currently completing her Masters degree in Educational Leadership through Yorkville University.

Caitlynn has proven herself to be a hard-working and compassionate administrator who understands the importance of family and community involvement in education.

Assistant Principal, Edwin Parr Composite School

Jason MestinsekAspen View Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Jason Mestinsek as assistant principal of Edwin Parr Composite School, effective for the 2022-23 school year.

Jason comes to Aspen View from Grande Prairie Public School Division where he has worked as a teacher, vice principal and principal since 2009. He has administrative experience with all grades, including helping to open a new high school in Grande Prairie in 2014. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alberta, a Bachelor of Education degree (Honours) from The King’s University; and a Masters of Education degree from Simon Fraser University.

Jason brings to Edwin Parr Composite School his strengths of fostering strong relationships with all stakeholders, and leading an evidence-based culture that informs and drives school planning.

Aspen View Public Schools continues to recruit to school-based administrative positions, and further announcements are anticipated in the coming weeks.
