On April 30, 2024, Smith-area school bus driver Jan Bosma was presented with the 2023-24 Aspen View Public Schools Board of Trustees Bus Driver of the Year Award, in a ceremony held before students, staff and community members at Smith School. The presentation was made by Aspen View Public Schools Ward 1 (Northwest) Trustee Brenda Fulmore.

The Board of Trustees of Aspen View Public Schools established the Bus Driver of the Year Award in 2018 to celebrate exemplary service and dedication demonstrated by school bus drivers as they carry out the important task of transporting Aspen View students to and from school.

Jan was nominated for the award by numerous students and staff members from Smith School.

“Jan is an amazing bus driver,” one nomination read. “She drives half an hour each day from Flatbush to do her daily runs. At the beginning of the year, we didn’t have enough drivers, so she ran two buses combined into her daily runs. She is a very kind, hardworking, dedicated and safe bus driver and our school is very lucky to know her and have her getting our students safely to school every day.”

“All the students who ride on Jan’s bus love her,” another nomination read. “The students are always greeted by Jan warmly. The kids may clamber to be on Jan’s bus because she is always generous and buys treats for the whole bus.”

Several nominations also referenced Jan’s willingness to drive for school field trips, and how they enjoy her singing along to country music on the bus.

“She always has a cheerful attitude when I see her, she always has a smile, and it always brightens my day,” read one nomination.

“Not only is Jan loved by all, she is also always safe,” another nomination stated. “Each time she drives us somewhere, we arrive safe and happy.”

In accepting the award, Jan credited the contribution of all school bus drivers.

“Each and every bus driver, if you get up in the morning and get on the bus, even if you only have one child, you’re doing an amazing job,” Jan commented. “It takes a big person to get out there and carry the most precious gift on earth.

“Each and every person who puts a positive outlook into a child’s life is a hero. I’m just doing a small part. I drive a bus. That’s why I do it.”
