March 20, 2020

Dear School Families,

On behalf of Aspen View Public Schools, I want to send our heartfelt gratitude to our school families and communities for their support and understanding in these uncertain times. I am so very proud of our staff who continue to work creatively and flexibility to support our students and prepare for the continuation of learning throughout innovative means.

Today, the Government of Alberta released new guidelines on how student learning will continue. The government news release can be found here: https://www.alberta.ca/release.cfm?xID=69874B5C32DE7-C7B9-FAFF-518A0FF91DCFD41D

The government guidelines released today are very consistent with the messaging we have given our teachers. There are new guidelines regarding the subjects for some grades, as well as for the amount of time that students should be spending on school work; we will continue to support our teachers to ensure we are meeting those guidelines.

Alberta Education has also issued an Education Continuity Q&A document and a Letter to Parents from Hon. Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Education, which may be helpful to you. Both are attached.

Preparing for March 30

Aspen View’s continuation of educational programming is ready to launch on March 30. We understand that it may look different in every household, but regardless, Aspen View Public Schools is committed to supporting our school families and making every effort to ensure student learning continues.

Each Aspen View school has reached out to its school families to gather information about:

  1. What method of delivering learning materials best meets their needs (such as email, Google Classroom, paper copies, etc.)
  2. Preferred methods of communication with schools and teachers;
  3. Any arrangements that need to be made to collect students’ personal items from schools.
  4. Any arrangements that need to be made regarding access to Chromebooks.

(If you have not heard from your child’s school, school offices will reopen March 30. Contact information for each school can be found here.) https://www.aspenview.org/about_us/schools

Technology

Chromebooks have become an integral part of the learning experience for students within Aspen View Public Schools. Schools have contacted individual families to assess technology needs and, if needed, made arrangements to loan school-based Chromebooks to students; those families will be contacted on March 30 to make arrangements to pick up Chromebooks. If you have not been contacted and need to borrow a school-based Chromebook, please email donna.wesley@aspenview.org or contact the school office on March 30.

Alternatively, some school families may be interested in purchasing Chromebooks for home use. Aspen View Public Schools’ technology provider, Compugen Inc., offers special pricing on HP Chromebooks with an upgraded three-year warranty to Aspen View school families. Details are available here: https://www.aspenview.org/departments/technology/new_chromebook_offer_for_aspen_view_families

Once again, we very much appreciate your patience as we move to a different learning delivery model.

Superintendent
