Visual Art
From Grade 1 through Senior High, the visual art curriculum guides students through a progression of skill development, creative exploration, and critical thinking.
In the early grades, students experiment with various media, techniques, and visual symbols while exploring form, function, and decoration. As they advance, they refine their work by focusing on realism, expression, and principles of design such as abstraction and efficiency.
In junior high, where art becomes an optional subject, students who choose to participate continue to express themselves through a wide range of tools and media while exploring the value and impact of art.
In senior high, students may select from two optional sequences: Art 10–20–30, which emphasizes creating art and developing creative processes, and Art 11–21–31, which focuses on the study of art’s influence on society, communities, and cultures—both encouraging students to reflect on the broader significance of visual art.
