Register to Ride

For the 2019-20 school year, all students requiring bus transportation must register (or re-register, if you rode this year) as our new registration forms include new information.

Please register early to guarantee your seat on the bus. Optional services listed below will be assigned as necessary on a first-come, first-served basis.

This section provides important information about registering your child to ride the school bus to any Aspen View school. If you have questions about the information here, please contact Rhonda Alix, Transportation Coordinator, at rhonda.alix@aspenview.org or 780-675-7080 Ext. 16.

Students waiting in line to get on busWho should register?

For the 2019-20 school year, all students requiring bus transportation must register (or re-register, if you rode this year) as our new registration forms include new information.

Please do not assume that the Transportation Department knows that you require transportation. Please register your student with the department yourself.

Once your child is registered, your child's grade will automatically be advanced each year and transportation will be provided. However, it is important that you complete and submit an updated Student Bus Registration Form if:

  • Your child changes schools;
  • Your residence changes;
  • Your contact information changes;
  • The number of students living at your residence changes (ex. younger sibling starting school, older sibling graduating)

The Student Bus Registration Form must be completed annually for:

  • Non-eligible students (students who live less than 2.4 km from their designated school)
  • School of Choice (students attending a school other than their designated school)

Alternative Transportation Request Forms must be completed annually.

Eligible Students

Students will be provided with transportation between their residence and their school at no cost if they:

  • Reside within the attendance area of the school in which they are enrolled; AND
  • Reside within the division boundary; AND
  • Reside at a distance greater than 2.4 km from that school.

Transportation of Non-eligible Students

Transportation may be offered to students who reside less than 2.4 km from their Designated School if:

  • There is sufficient seating on the bus after all Eligible Students have been accommodated;
  • It does not significantly impact the ride time of Eligible Students on the route;
  • Parents/caregivers agree to pay transportation fees as determined by the Board.

Transportation of Non-Eligible Students may be revoked at any time if space availability becomes an issue, as priority is given to Eligible Students in a designated attendance area.

Parents/caregivers may apply to the Transportation Coordinator if they feel that exceptional circumstances, such as medical conditions or safety concerns, do not fit the criteria noted above. Such requests will be considered on an individual basis.

School of Choice

Transportation may be offered to students attending a school other than their Designated School if:

  • There is sufficient seating on the bus after all Eligible and Non-eligible Students have been accommodated;
  • It does not significantly impact the ride time of Eligible Students on the route;
  • Parents/caregivers arrange to transport the student to a Designated Bus Stop within the school's Attendance Area.
  • Parents/caregivers agree to pay transportation fees as determined by the Board.

Transportation of School of Choice Students may be revoked at any time if space availability becomes an issue, as priority is given to Eligible Students in a designated attendance area.

Non-Resident Students

Transportation may be offered to students residing outside the division boundaries if:

  • There is sufficient seating on the bus after all Eligible, Non-eligible and School of Choice Students have been accommodated;
  • It does not significantly impact the ride time of Eligible Students on the route;
  • Parents/caregivers arrange to transport the student to a Designated Bus Stop within the Attendance Area of their school in which the student is enrolled.
  • Parents/caregivers agree to pay transportation fees as determined by the Board.

Transportation of Non-Resident Students may be revoked at any time if space availability becomes an issue, as priority is given to Eligible Students in a designated attendance area.

Alternate Transportation Requests

Requests for student pick-up/drop-off at a location other than their legal residence may be submitted annually to the Transportation Coordinator for approval. Alternate requests will only be considered if:

  • There is sufficient seating on the bus;
  • The alternate transportation request does not extend bus routes nor significantly increase students' ride times;
  • The alternate transportation request delivers the student to the care of a parent/caregiver or recognized child care provider. Examples include parents' workplaces or babysitters.
  • Parents/caregivers agree to pay transportation fees as determined by the Board.

Alternate Transportation Requests may be revoked at any time if space availability becomes an issue, as priority is given to Eligible Students in a designated attendance area.

Occasional Transportation Requests

Occasional (less than four times per school year) transportation of students for specific circumstances (ex. attending a friend's birthday party) is a convenient practice that we try to accommodate. Cooperation from parents is necessary. Currently, any student registered with Aspen View can be transported on a one-time special occasion provided that there is:

  • Room on the bus
  • A note is provided to the Transportation Coordinator by the parent approving the ride 24 hours prior to the required transportation.
  • Notification to the school has been given.

Private Property/Yard Entry

School buses will generally not enter private property for the purpose of student pick-up or drop-off. Pick-ups and drop-offs will take place at the residential gate immediately adjacent to the municipal road allowance or highway on the school bus route.

Exceptions to normal practice are:

  1. There is no satisfactory/safe turnaround point on the municipal road allowance; or
  2. The student is not capable of walking as evidenced by a medical certificate issued by a qualified physician.

Whenever entry to private property is required, a Consent for Yard Entry Agreement must be completed and submitted to the Transportation Department.
